Painting and Kinds of Painting

What is painting?

Painting is the process of applying pigment on a flat surface paper, canvas, wood, cloth or plaster. Pigments in the form of powder are mixed with a binder usually a liquid to produce paint.

Each kind of paint has a unque quality that an artist can employ to advantage.

Kinds of Painting

Oil - The pigments are mixed with oil and applied to a flat surface usually a canvas. Today, oil paint is factory-prepared and comes in tubes. The paint can be applied thinly or thickly through a brush, an air brush, a palette knife or with bare hands. Since the paint dries slowly, the painting can be changed and worked out allover again. Its a very flexible medium.

Watercolor - is tempered paint made of pure ground pigment bound with gum Arabic. Paper is a good material for watercolor painting. The paint is applied to a thin almost transparent film. Once applied, little or no corrections at all can be made because the paint dries quickly. It should be applied in quick and spontaneous strokes.

Fresco - This paint is the application of earth pigment mixed with limewater to a wet plaster on the wall. It should be quickly and precisely, because when the paint is applied to the plaster, the color sinks and the picture becomes an integral part of the wall. The picture last as long as the wall exists
